Phillip Powell Jr., 88 of Glouster passed away
Tuesday December 23, 2008 at the Hickory Creek
Nursing Center, The Plains. Born April 5,
1920 in Millfield, he was the son of the late
Phillip Sr. and Alice Skivers Powell. He was
a WWII army veteran where he received an
Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three
bronze stars, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon,
an American Theater Ribbon, and a Victory
Medal. He retired from Ohio University where
he was the maintenance supervisor and he was
previously employed by the Athens Farm
Bureau. Phillip also owned and operated a
farm.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth
Hoisington Powell of Glouster; three
daughters, Phyllis Gaskalla of Buchtel,
Darlene (Charles) Campbell of Redtown, and
Rebecca (Keith) Evener of Millfield; 7
grandchildren, Sheryl Curry, Sandy (Dave)
Young, Phillip Runyon, Travis (Mandy)
Campbell, Erica (Jay) North, Keith Evener, and
Jennifer (Steve) Kochis; 18 great
grandchildren, Sarah, David, Elizabeth,
Christopher, Ashley, Amanda, Sabrina, Anthony,
Miranda, Victoria, Zachary, Mitchell, Riley,
Isabelle, Elyas, Ashton, Preston, and Braeden;
and a sister-in-law, Donna Powell.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death
by a great grandson, Gabriel; three brothers,
Donald "Buss", Jim, and Ritchie Powell; four
sisters, Thelma "Bummy" Wemmer, Ruth Powell,
Willow "Wink" Pughline, and Frances "Pank"
Boudinot; and a son-in-law, Charles Gaskalla.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on
Sunday December 28, 2008 at the Morrison
Funeral Chapel, Glouster-Bishopville.
Interment will be in the Hilltop Cemetery,
Millfield where there will be a military
graveside service conducted by the United
States Army Color Guard and also the Combined
Color Guard Unit. Friends may call at the
funeral home on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to
