John "Duke" Cunningham, 68 of Jacksonville
passed away Sunday April 26, 2009 at Doctor's
Hospital, Nelsonville. Born March 9, 1941 in
Chauncey, he was the son of the late Hollis
and Dorothy Ferrell Cunningham. He graduated
from Chauncey Dover high school in 1959 and
was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Korea. He
retired from CSX Railroad after 30 years of
service in 1999. He was a member of the
Jacksonville V.F.W. and the Athens American
Legion. He was a devoted and loving husband,
father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Esther
Bartlett Cunningham of Jacksonville; two
daughters, Pam (David) Campbell of
Jacksonville and Tonya (Ron) Huiss of The
Plains; one grandson whom he adored, Conner
Huiss; three brothers, Jack (Ruth), Fred (Pat)
and R. Dean (Sylvia) Cunningham; one sister,
Jane (Charles) Pancake; one aunt, Eva Benedum;
a cousin Jim Benedum; and several nieces,
nephews, and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death
by four brothers, David, Bob, Terry, and
Jimmy; and one sister, Sharon.
Family will receive friends on Friday May 1,
2009 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the
Morrison Funeral Chapel, Glouster-
Bishopville. At Duke's request, he will be
cremated and a graveside service will be held
at 11 a.m. on Saturday May 9, 2009 at the
Hilltop Cemetery, Millfield. A comforting
