James Kidd Obituary

James F. Kidd went to be with the Lord on
Wednesday January 26, 2005. He considered his
home at the farm in Millfield, but spent the
last few years of his life with his youngest
daughter, Candy and her family in Glouster.
Born July 14, 1912 in Nelsonville, he was the
son of the late Floyd David and Edith Lewis
Kidd and the husband of the late Chrystal
Morgan Kidd whom he was married to for 61
years.

James was a retired coal miner, who began
working in Athens County Coal Mines as a youth
with his grandfather, James Thomas Kidd. He
was also a former employee of McBee Litton
Industries of Athens. He was proud to have
been a coal miner and of his involvement with
mine rescue. He was responsible for
establishing the Southeastern Ohio Black Lung
Association. Through this grass roots effort,
he, with the support of his wife, helped many
miners, and their dependents, obtain Black
Lung benefits. James testified at US Senate
hearings in 1969-70, and was influential in
drafting standards that compensated disabled
coal miners through the Federal Black Lung
Program. James also served on the Ohio Black
Lung Advisory Committee, which helped
establish respiratory clinics to treat coal
miners with breathing problems. Many of his
most treasured friendships and memories were
made during this era. He enjoyed reminiscing
about his horses, the pulling contests he won,
and his days as a coal miner. He was a member
of the United Mine Workers of America, Local
Union 1886, and the Trimble Masonic Lodge #557.

He is survived by daughters; Barbara Jo
(Richard) Zielke of Saginaw, MI, and Candy
(Gregory) Winner of Glouster, sons; James R,
(Jane) Kidd of Brooksville, FL, Tom (Nancy)
Kidd, and Roger (Darlene) Kidd of Millfield,
15 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren, and
special friends who lovingly provided home
care.

Besides his parents and wife, James was
preceded in death by an infant daughter,
Joyce; sisters, Henrietta Kidd Weatherman,
Thelma Kidd Maynard, and Florence Kidd Brown
Chalfant, and many beloved coal miners and
friends.
